South African Travel
In recent weeks there have been several travel articles on South Africa. Cape Town and its environs , of course, are always popular, as recent articles in The New York Times and Washington Post reveal.

But the country’s hinterlands are also popular. The Eastern cape, one of my regular stomping grounds, is a wonderful and often-overlooked part of the country and it is viable for budget travel.
Indeed, the entire country can be very accessible for those for whom every rand will count. South Africa can be expensive to reach, but once there it literally offers opportunities for those with more cash than they know what to do with or for those on a student’s income.

The Eastern Cape is beautiful. It is a pity that financial mismanagement rumours surface all too often.
There is a wealth of history and unrivalled beauty. It makes me proud to know I live in South Africa and have access to such tranquility and friendly places.

Esther –
I love the Eastern Cape as well. There is the matter of mismanagement but also of poverty. The EC does not have the industrial base of some provinces and thus unemployment is high. Mismanagement is a problem, but not the most significant one.

The Eastern Cape is the best kept secret as far as I am concerned. The region is just absolutely beautiful. I visit the area every 24 months to see my family. Apart from the financial and economic woes, crime has risen steadily over the past years. It saddens me that apart from the wide spread poverty that is still a reality for many, the government has no plan to eradicate crime. The poor are the most vulnerable.
